Limited Edition '1852 Adelaide Pound' Cracked Die

Immortalising Australia’s First Gold Coin

To paint the coin that saved South Australia from the brink of bankruptcy in 1852 was a fascinating experience in my second collaboration with Coinworks. This limited edition Giclee print of the 1852 Adelaide Pound ‘Cracked Die’ meticulously captures the essence and historical importance of Australia’s first gold coin.

The Artwork

Recreating such an intricate work of art on canvas with oil paint was a journey that required both precision and a deep respect for history. The process of painting the Adelaide Pound allowed me to explore the delicate craftsmanship of the original coin, bringing to life its intricate details and storied past. This artwork pays homage to the exceptional artistry and historical significance of the original Adelaide Pound, and my background in fine art and numismatics provided the perfect foundation for this project.

Historical Context

The 1852 Adelaide Pound is a landmark in Australian history, being the first gold coin minted during the country's gold rush era. Struck at the Government Assay Office in Adelaide, this coin played a pivotal role in stabilising the South Australian economy. The coin was crafted under challenging conditions by Joshua Payne, an engraver and die sinker hired by the Adelaide Assay Office soon after his arrival in 1849. Payne’s skill was instrumental in producing the Adelaide Pound, the first coin with an entirely Australian design.

During the initial production of the Type I Adelaide Pound, only 100 coins were struck before the reverse die cracked under pressure. Today, fewer than 40 of these coins remain, making high-quality Type I Adelaide Pounds extremely scarce. The coin was struck using a reverse die that featured stylish lettering and a simple, elegant beaded inner-circle, symbolizing the coin’s official status and importance.
